Iowa v. Purdue Picks & Predictions

The family is heading over to Indiana to tailgate for the Iowa v. Purdue game this weekend, so to get ready I thought I would study our opponent a little bit and write this preview.  Enjoy! After a recent good result at Minnesota, the Hawkeyes are looking to repeat the feat next week when they host Wisconsin. Before that, there is a small matter of the game against Purdue. The Boilermakers haven't received a lot of praise even though they are coming off a narrow victory Illinois. It may seem unfair as a win is a win, but I do think the standard of the opponent as to be taken into consideration. Purdue may have already managed to beat their number of wins for last season, but it is hard to see them upsetting the Hawkeyes.  Vegas seems to agree.  According to BoydsBets Iowa is favored by 12.5 points in this game. Possibilities If they do pull off the win, and I am not sure that they have the wherewithal to do this, there are a number of major events that will have to happen: 1. The first time in 4 years that they will have managed to win two in a row. 2. The first time in 5 years that they achie...

Hawks in the Big Ten Tournament

Well, Iowa basketball couldn't quite get it done in the Big Ten tournament yesterday, losing to Illinois.  The same Illini team that is 15-18 on the year. The loss moved Iowa to 21-10.  The Hawks peaked in January and have fallen like a rock ever since.  We were ranked in the top 10 in the nation and in line for the No. 1 seed, and the right to play in Des Moines, just a few weeks ago. Now we have lost six of our last seven games and I don't know if there is a fix in store before the NCAA Tournament starts or not. It doesn't seem like Fran McCaffery is in a very good mood either.  He was pretty testy in his postgame interview, refusing to answer what the play call was supposed to be under the basket with four seconds left on the clock. I've been tracking Iowa's odds to win the NCAA tournament.  They were up to 12/1 which was 3rd best in the nation in late January.  Now, we were at 20/1 entering the conference tournament and will likely slip even more now. Iowa was projected to be a 5-seed before yester...

Team Enters the Field

I just found this on YouTube today and figured that I had to share it.  To me it's one of the best team introductions in all of sports. The whole stadium is thumping for a few minutes before the team takes the field.  Basically as soon as they start airing the AC/DC Back in Black over the speakers. The other cool thing besides just the crowd cheering and the great music is how the Hawkeyes come out of the tunnel.  They wait for everyone to join, then hold hands and take the field as one massive unit. I think Hayden Fry is the one who started this.  Basically he wanted a show of team unity and thought everyone taking the field together was a great way to do it.  The tradition has stuck ever since. It's been labeled "the Swarm." I think it's because the yellow and gold uniforms taking together that way looks like a bunch of bees swarming the nest. You can also see in the video how sweet the stadium looks with the alternating sections of black and gold.  It's amazing how an email from the University stating that your section is a black, or yours is a gold works out so well. That's bec...

Ticket Prices on Bowl Games

The Rose Bowl is by far the priciest bowl game. (Courtesy of TicketCity.com) I came across this infographic today and can't say that I am surprised.  People act like they don't know that Iowa fans are the best in college football, well this just goes to prove it once again. You see Iowa hasn't been to the Rose Bowl since 1991.  This isn't like a Michigan or Ohio State were our fans are taking for granted a trip to the Grand Daddy of Them All.  You see, we know that this kind of thing comes around about once in every 25 years or so. If you are over the age of 50, there is a good chance this is the last time Iowa makes it to the Rose Bowl in your lifetime. While I'm not quite 50, I do know that this is going to be a great experience for the family and I to attend the game and watch our Hawkeyes play, and hopefully win! That is why there is such a frenzy for people wanting to attend this game.  The travel packages sold through sites like Hawkeye Nation sold out quickly. I also get there are jokes.  What else do people from Iowa have to do?  Who wouldn't want to leave the cold wea...
